good morning, pumpkin toadlets (previously) are poisonous if ingested (their skin secretes the same tetrodotoxin as puffer fish!) - but like, there’s probably not good eatin’ on one anyway, so why would you bother
actually, i wonder - how many calories WOULD you get from eating a pumpkin toadlet?
let’s see…
they weigh about 15g
a whole cow is about 60% edible, so let’s assume pumpkin toadlets are about the same - 9g
frogs are about 25-39% lean muscle mass, so let’s say 1/3 just as a rough estimate - 3g muscle, 6g fat tissue
muscle is about 75% water, body fat is more like 10-15% water, so let’s say - .75g protein, 5g fat
protein is 4 cal/g, fat is 9 cal/g, so all in - 48 calories (ish)
not bad, actually! that’s about the same as a chompling (though the macros1 aren’t as good, so again, why bother)
“some [tennis] balls recovered on the roof of Westminster Hall in London, during a period of restoration in the 1920's , found old balls made of putty and human hair, possibly cultivated from the French they guillotined in the town square” - The History of Tennis Balls
frog etymology is confusing, but it did lead me to learn the word hypocoristic (imitating or reflecting the speech of children) (though nowadays supposedly hypocorism is more often used to just mean a diminutive pet name).
also in etymology,
CareeNing means lurching from side to side, while careeRing means moving forward at full speed, though both have converged over time towards meaning moving fast in an uncontrolled way.
Their etymology is unrelated despite them sounding similar and becoming ~synonymous:
careening comes from terminology for the keel of a ship, and the way a ship was tipped on its side when removed from the water
careering comes from jousting/racecourse terminology
Their convergence of meaning comes from when automobiles started replacing horses but lurched erratically while racing out of control.
why do I care?
FOR GOOD REASON - bc I’ve had the phrase “it sometimes seems like every topic with him is destined to go caree[n]ing loinward” stuck in my head ever since this 2004 article on my elementary school’s founder was published, and only recently discovered that I’d been misremembering it this whole time - every topic with him tended to go careeRing loinward, not careeNing loinward! whoops!
but as we all already know, pumpkin toadlets are shitty jumpers because of their itty bitty little semicircular canals are too tiny to form a properly functioning vestibular system, so (unlike stanley) careening still feels more appropriate for how earthward they go
actually i do the ketogains thing nowadays, not just keto - so, MOAR PROTEIN (recently someone was surprised to see me eating shrimp, but when I explained they’re a great source of lean protein he was all, yeah, that tracks - and then we got distracted discussing shrimp welfare instead)
